Does It Really Matter Which Locksmith You Call?
When you have an emergency locksmith problem, it is not unusual to choose the first locksmith you can get hold of. Even when you have a non-emergency lock problem, it can be tempting to call the first number you find. Is that a good idea and does it really matter which locksmith you call? Unfortunately, I think it matters a lot. That is because, in my experience, not all locksmiths offer the same level of service and have the same expertise. In addition, charges vary wildly with many charging exorbitant prices for what I would call ‘simple jobs’.
What sets a good locksmith apart from the less reputable ones?
1. Commitment to continuous training
New locks are always being developed and added to the market. A good locksmith needs to keep on top of what new locks are being used in their area. I believe that enrolling and completing courses on non-destructive entry techniques for new locks is essential. Less skilled locksmiths, who have not done their homework, will just take a drill to any lock they can’t open. Liberty Locksmiths always do our very best to open locks without damaging the door, the surround or the lock.
2. Staying up-to-date with the latest tools and technology
As a Glasgow locksmith, I regularly have to invest in modern equipment and technology. Doing this enables me to offer more advanced services and respond to evolving security needs. These tools can cost hundreds of pounds each, taking hours, days and even weeks to master. Becoming an expert locksmith takes a big time commitment and I believe that to do it well, you need to have a real passion for the job.
3. Honest, fair pricing
A local locksmith will receive much of his business from good reviews and word-of-mouth recommendations. They will constantly work hard to build a good reputation for their business. Overcharging or shoddy work will always work against them. Rogue locksmiths will not care in the same way. They are just thinking about today’s job and not about repeat business or reputation. Similarly, large national locksmith companies use a bank of locksmiths to do the work. You will be paying a lot extra for this type of locksmith to cover the costs of the call centre etc. You will have no idea of the skills of the actual locksmith that will arrive at your door.
When you choose a locksmith, you want to get the best possible service at the best possible price. Unfortunately, not all locksmiths are equal. Skills, knowledge, expertise and prices can vary widely. This means it’s important that you do your homework beforehand. Check out customer reviews on Google, Facebook, Yelp, etc. Also, visit any potential locksmith’s website to find out a bit more about them. Look for a van with signage and see if there is a photo of the actual locksmith. Find out what services they offer and any skills they have. All these things will give you confidence that the locksmith you choose is genuine, local and will have the necessary skills to do a good job for a fair price.
